Bob Arum, who has never knowingly undersold a fight, responded with predictable enthusiasm to the suggestion that Ricky Hatton's world title fight with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on 2 May might be "the richest of all time".
If so, each fighter can expect to earn between £15m and £20m, although such estimates depend hugely on pay-per-view take-up.

On the London leg of a quick promotional tour of the UK for what is potentially the fight of the year, Arum, who has been promoting in the big time since the mid-sixties, suggested the main reason the fight could generate higher than expected revenue is the effect the recession is having on families in the United States.

Hatton and Pacquiao meet at the MGM Grand, the scene of triumph and disappointment for both of them in the past, competing for Hatton's IBO light-welterweight belt and, more importantly, Pacquiao's standing as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

"It could be the richest fight of all time, you never know," Arum said, sitting alongside Pacquiao at the Imperial War Museum in London yesterday.

"For me to say [that], how would I know now how many people are going to actually buy it? Well, the funny thing that we have found in the United States – and I think you'll find it in England – is that these bad economic times have enhanced pay-per-view."

From five-star hotel lounges and army camps to Manila's slums, Filipinos gathered today and celebrated Manny Pacquiao's win over Oscar de la Hoya in a boxing victory that gave the country a momentary respite from financial worries.

Many of the usually bustling Manila streets were empty of traffic. Police reported few crimes.

Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 knockouts) came up two weight classes to fight de la Hoya (39-6) who dropped down to meet him at 147 pounds. De la Hoya, who has become richest and most marketable star in boxing over a 16-year span, had a big reach advantage and towered over Pacquiao, setting off fears he could outpunch the Filipino star.

When de la Hoya declined to come out after the eighth round of the Las Vegas bout, the cheering and jeers rose to a roar here as followers yelled Pacquiao's name, waved Philippine flags and threw punches in the air.

"Superb, that's David slaying Goliath," said Enrique Ancheta, 67, who along with about 2,000 fans jammed a small stadium in the agricultural city of Cauayan, about 175 miles northeast of Manila.

President Arroyo, a key supporter of Pacquiao, called to congratulate him.

"His triumph is again a great unifier of Filipinos," Mrs. Arroyo's spokesman Jesus Dureza said. "While he was an underdog to bookies and matchmakers abroad, he was already a winner to all Filipinos."

Amid a surfeit of problems hounding the country, Pacquiao was a "saving grace," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.

"The winnings of Manny Pacquiao always come at the proper time," Ermita said. "We have this economic downturn, suddenly the morale of the Filipino people is promptly boosted."

Pacquiao's mother, Dionisia, said she could not stand watching her son square off with a bigger foe.

"I was nervous in the beginning because Oscar de la Hoya was big. I didn't want to watch and I just ran to the prayer room with my friends," she said. "Our prayers were powerful."

Virgin shark got pregnant in Virginia aquarium

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10, 2008 (Reuters) — Scientists using DNA testing have confirmed the second-known instance of "virgin birth" in a shark -- a female Atlantic blacktip shark named Tidbit that produced a baby without a male shark.The shark came to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach not long after being born in the wild and lived there for eight years with no males of the same species, said Beth Firchau, the aquarium's curator of fishes.
The 5-foot (1.5-meter) shark died after being removed from the tank for a veterinary examination, and a subsequent necropsy revealed that Tidbit was carrying a fully developed shark pup nearly ready to be born, Firchau said.
Demian Chapman, a shark scientist with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University in New York state, performed DNA testing that showed the pup had no father. Virgin birth such as this is known as parthenogenesis.
A year ago, Chapman used genetic testing to confirm that a hammerhead shark at a zoo in Omaha gave birth to a pup in 2002, also after parthenogenesis.
"It tells us that the original case we documented last year was not some fluke of nature. This is something that might be more common than we think it is, and widespread among sharks," Chapman said in a telephone interview.
Parthenogenesis also has been documented in Komodo dragons, snakes, birds, fish and amphibians, Chapman said.
It occurs when a baby is conceived without male sperm fertilizing the female's eggs. In the type of parthenogenesis seen in sharks, the mother's chromosomes split during egg development.
How the sharks do it is unclear. Chapman said they may use a hormone to trigger eggs to develop in this manner in the absence of males. Or perhaps if eggs remain unfertilized with no males around, a certain fraction develop into embryos.
"It's a finding that kind of rewrites the textbooks a little," Chapman said. "It just goes to show how the ocean keeps its secrets very well. And the sharks in particular."
"Of course, sharks are being killed at such a rate that unless we do something to stop that, we're not even going to learn all their secrets before they're gone," Chapman added.
The findings appear in the Journal of Fish Biology.

Aftershocks demolish China homes, todays news

Two further aftershocks have destroyed more than 420,000 houses in the Chinese region hit by a massive earthquake two weeks ago, state-run media say. Many of the homes appear to have been empty, but six people are said to have been critically injured in the tremors. They came as thousands of people were moved from near a lake formed by landslides, amid fears the water could breach banks and deluge the area. The official death toll from the 12 May quake in Sichuan province is 67,183.
About 20,790 people are listed as missing, with more than five million people homeless since the earthquake. UN raises Burma cyclone estimate, todays news..

The UN has sharply increased its estimate of those severely affected by Burma's cyclone to 2.5m people. The figure was revised up from the 1.5m previously thought to be in need, following the storm 12 days ago. Since Cyclone Nargis struck, hardly any foreign aid workers have been allowed into Burma to hand out relief supplies.

Latest Burmese official figures put the death toll at almost 38,500 with 27,838 more missing but the Red Cross warned as many as 128,000 could be dead. The first US aid flight to Burma following the devastating cyclone nine days ago has landed in Rangoon. The US spent days negotiating with Burma's military government to gain permission for the aircraft to land.

The junta has admitted that parts of the worst-affected region remain cut-off, but the generals are still refusing entry to foreign aid workers. The official death toll has risen to almost 32,000, with close to another 30,000 missing.

But aid agencies fear 1.5m could die if help does not come, and estimate that 100,000 have already perished. An official from Save the Children in Burma told the BBC that about half the people affected by the cyclone were receiving help.

Nine days after Cyclone Nargis struck Burma's low-lying Irrawaddy Delta region, survivors are beginning to gather in makeshift camps around the edges of the disaster zone. Read full story on this site..

Ombudsman: Independent probe on surgery scandal ‘worthless’

MANILA, Philippines - An official of the office of the Ombudsman Visayas said on Wednesday that the investigation of hospital officials on the Cebu surgery scandal is “worthless."
Deputy Ombudsman Pelagio Apostol said that the administrative probe by the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) on the case is “mote and academic" as his office has already investigated the controversy and will file charges against those involved, GMA regional network news Balitang Bisdak said Wednesday.
In a media conference, Apostol explained that the office of the Ombudsman was first to make an investigation and it will proceed with filing of charges against the 14 doctors and nurses based on the findings.
The VSMMC administration had conducted an independent probe.
The Ombudsman is still determining whether administrative charges could be slapped against the doctors and nurses and whether they should be suspended from work. Officials of the VSMMC have remained mum on the scandal.

The scandal involved an operation being conducted by 14 medical practitioners on a gay patient to remove a perfume canister out of his rectum.
It became controversial when a video footage of the surgery appeared on YouTube, apopular video-sharing website in the Internet.
The video showed the medical practitioners giggling and cheering as the canister wasbeing removed from the patient’s rectum.

Last saturday i watched Jessica Soho's " Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho" on GMA 7, one of her topics was about blogging. As we watch the said documentary program, she started to quote blogging saying the bad side and the good side. I thought it was really that bad as my family knows that i am also a blogger. She featured the fellows housewife doing blogging as her theraphy for her lost son. Then followed the aussie guy as we all know, doing an exposure using his blog. Remember him? What brings my attention was blogging is not only writting your ideas and recording your everyday chores, but its also writting an information publish in a whole world. So the danger is in the writter himself. As like me, im doing this just like a housewife who lost his son. Im making blog as my hobby same as i earned money from it. Like the girls featured in Jessica Soho's documentary program she also earned money from blogging. I started doing blogging when i watched it on Mel & Joey program, they featured blogs as a way of living. As a student i was interested to know how it was. So i try searching online how to make money from my machine. At first my family laughing at me as i enter my room the whole day and doing writting even copying from old magazine. My father even told me it was an old time foolish things coz no one will pay you money for not even knowing who you are, how old are you and what are you. Coz im not even a good writter, dunno if all my grammar is correct. But thanks for my non stop searching until i found it. Now my father smile at me everytime i return the mocked from him. But the good thing is i gave him his cigar allowance everytime i got paid. And he even proud of me, for as my age now i know how to earned money online. Now i do blogging not only for my fathers dogs and for my everyday activities but also for my everyday needs. Now all my classmates reads all my blogs and asked me how i did that. I always say that when you do something, do it whole heartedly and patiently. And thanks for GMA 7 Jessica Soho for featuring this carrer, Blogging....

Japanese scientists have reacted angrily to media reports that surplus whale meat is being sold as pet food. A UK conservation group said last week that Japan's research programme was landing so many whales, unwanted meat was being turned into dog food. But the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) in Tokyo said less than 100kg of a species not covered by a global ban was sold to a pet food manufacturer.

The ICR said Japan does not have a glut of whale meat. In a statement issued on Thursday, the ICR's director general criticised claims made by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) and the media's reporting of them. "This is an indictment on western media who do not question the information they receive on whaling and instead further reinforce falsehoods and wrong assumptions," said Dr Hiroshi Hatanaka. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is thinking of adding high-tech features to cards which verify identities of subsidized rice beneficiaries.
In a radio report, DSWD secretary Esperanza Cabral said that the cards will soon contain bar codes which will trigger an alarm when scanned. Besides discouraging the use of fake cards, it will also prevent individuals from buying government-subsidized rice and then selling them at higher rates.
“We will place bar code systems so that the cards whose bar codes do not match will trigger an alarm when scanned. That way, unscrupulous individuals will not get cheap rice," Cabral said on government-run dzRB radio.
Cabral said that this initiative is separate and independent from another program, called the “Beneficiary Identified for Government Assistance (BIGAS) numbers," which will be issued to local government units to prevent the proliferation of fake cards. “We are taking all measures to make sure the cards will not be easily faked," she said.

My summer vocation..

I just came back from my week long vocation in Zambales my aunties hubby town.. A 250 km north of Luzon. Its verry fun having a long summer vocation on that place together with my dog Popoy, my american cocker spaniel dog .. We used to go to the beach which is only 5mins from my titas house, we start swimming as early as 7 in the morning till noon. As we ussually observed we were the only family using the private resort, a distant relative of my uncle who is now in Guam. His son, my cousin and my other cousins using the huge cottage as far as i know is free for us.
The Ocean looks so calm and verry clear crystal water in dimmed morning until its shines by the sunlight in the afternoon. What brings my attentions is the little boy walks in the ocean waiting for his father to arrived came from fishing. Hes only 3 or 4 years old if im not mistaken. I asked him whom his waiting then he replied his waiting for his father. His little footprints embeded on the sands for he wore nothing aside from his short. I asked him if he have his breakfast then he said he never even have his dinner last night coz his father left them nothing only but water and coffee and no sugar.
At his age hes already smart saying that when his father will arive he will fall in line in the school buying an NFA rice for this is the only rice they can buy. I tell my cousin about the rice issue, i thought this place is a rice fields in the north then why there is a falling in line of people here buying for a NFA rice? He simply said that rice here are already gone or sold out in buying station. And now they are the one suffer for that dillemma.
The only one cheap here is a kilo of dilis. The father of that little boy got when they arrived. In a whole day and night of fishing the only fish they got is what we called tamban and dilis. And now they sell it for as low as fifty pesos a kilo, they got arround 20 kilos of that fish and thats is much for a day of fishing. The only problem is they are 7 fisherman in a boat or in a group. As long as they will sold out that bunch of fish they will devided the amount in 7. How this little boy will buy that NFA rice and a small piece of chicken or pork for their lunch or dinner? If his father will take out the sum of money for as less as two hundred pesos.
Then i asked myself im still lucky coz i was here for vocation and nothing else to think but how to enjoy life of a small boy like me. Im also lucky for i never even skipped dinner or breakfast in my families table. Or am i lucky coz my father is not a fisherman nor a farmer? But the only thing i know is im lucky coz i have my father who is even seperated from my mom, still not forsaken me... And thats my father.. my only father...

Boracay Regency Beach Resort has earmarked P250 million for the construction of a 120-room, high-end hotel as it capitalizes on the growing tourist traffic to the island in the coming years.

Henry O. Chusuey, Boracay Regency chairman, said the hotel would be called The Regency Lagoon and will be built on a 7,800-square meter lot along Boracay’s main road.

"Construction of The Regency Lagoon will begin next month and will be completed by November next year," Mr. Chusuey told reporters in Boracay on Friday.

Once The Regency Lagoon is completed, Boracay Regency will have a total of 500 rooms. "We are bullish about Boracay’s tourism potentials. We expect greater demand for more luxurious accommodations in Boracay in the future," Mr. Chusuey said.

Tourism records showed tourist arrivals in Boracay went up by 8% to almost 600,000 last year.

Visitors to Boracay generated P10.9 billion in tourism receipts in 2007, from P10.2 billion a year earlier, mainly due to increased spending on hotel accommodation and food.

Mr. Chusuey is confident that Boracay would continue growing this year amid a global economic slowdown. "We expect more Koreans to discover Boracay. At the same time, the affordable airfares will help encourage local tourists to visit," he added.

Out of the total tourist arrivals last year, 359,433 were local tourists, 208,870 were foreign and 28,404 were Filipino workers overseas.

Tourists from Korea were the bulk of foreign visitors coming to Boracay, reaching 128,909 last year from 124,618 in 2006.

Meanwhile, Boracay Regency Resort has spent P750 million to expand its guest facilities.

Mr. Chusuey said he had built a new international standard spa and a new restaurant focusing on Asian cuisine. The Kai Regency Spa and Zhu Restaurant were inaugurated on Friday.

"Our business success is mostly credited to our mission of satisfying our guests’ expectations," Mr. Chusuey said, adding that Boracay Regency’s service and facilities are unmatched.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – An ancient burial cave was discovered in the Philippine island of Mindanao, south of Manila and officials have sealed the site to prevent looting of artifacts, many of them jars made from clay.

It was not immediately known whether there are other treasures in the cave which was accidentally discovered by quarry diggers on Wednesday in Maitum town in Sarangani province.

The latest discovery in the village of Pinol was near another ancient burial site discovered in 1991 where burial jars, shaped in different human forms, had been recovered inside Ayub cave.

Lingling Jabel, owner of the quarry site, informed local authorities about the find and the site was immediately sealed and security forces are guarding the cave where several burial jars have been recovered."

The quarry site is more or less half a kilometer away from Ayub Cave. The archaeological find at Ayub Cave consisted of anthropomorphic burial jars that date back nearly 2000 years ago. The anthropomorphic potteries of human figures depicting various facial expressions are associated to the Metal Age in the Philippines," the local government said in a statement."

I feel happy that we have found another valuable artifacts that would help us understand more our history as a people not only in the Philippines, but probably in the whole Southeast Asia," the mayor of Maitum, Elsie Perrett, said.

Dr. Eusebio Dizon, curator of the Archaeology Division and chief of the Underwater Archaeology Section of the National Museum, has described Ayub Cave as "the most significant cave in Mindanao" and its finds as "unparalleled in Southeast Asia."

A team of experts from the National Museum are expected to arrive in the town to inspect the new cave.

The site had been dated to A.D. 70 to 370 and 5 B.C. to A.D. 225. The radiocarbon dates were obtained from the soot samples taken from the small earthenware vessel found inside one of the anthropomorphic burial jar.

The jars are unique and they are like portraits of distinct individuals, of specific dead persons whose remains they guard, described the burial jars in a book entitled "Faces from Maitum," written by Dizon himself after the 1991 discovery of the Ayub cave.

The provincial government described the cave as a unique and fascinating assemblage of archeological find - human faces and figures in earthenware- that depicts Sarangani's cultural wealth was excavated here.

It said the recovered potteries were used as secondary burial jars. Its coverings were molded as human heads emulating different facial expressions of happiness, contentment, and even a trace of desolation."Such were shaped artistically tracing the most conservative detail of the human face that can still be seen in the broken fragments of the jars outside the cave... retaining their natural color even up to now," it said.

Ayub cave is made up of Miocene limestone formation. The opening is about two meters wide and two meters high, sloping downward to at least 20 degrees angle and extending a length of 11 meters from the entrance.

No grounds to stop condo project in Subic - SBMA exec

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) administrator Armando Arreza said Tuesday he is willing to shed light on the 22-storey condo project by Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp (HHIC), insisting that there are no grounds to stop the project.
Arreza stressed that under the circumstances, this was the "best use of land" for the former assembly and unassembly of weapons (AUW) area left by the US military in 1991.
"This area was previously used for conversion of second hand vehicles, which is more of an environment risk. Under our current zoning guidelines, the Cubi-Triboa area is a residential area, and is a better fit for the environment," Arreza said in a news conference.
Over the weekend, the SBMA came under fire from several senators for allowing the project, including from administration Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, who chairs the Senate committee on urban planning, housing and resettlement. Zubiri had described the two-tower condo project as "shot with environmental violations.
"But SBMA ecology center manager Ameth Dela Llana-Koval maintained that the project was issued an environmental compliance certificate (ECC), and the same passed the environmental laws of the country.
"We meticulously monitored and oversaw the entire project from the start. Despite the size of the project, only 28 non-prime specie tree were affected and were replaced by 25:1 ratio of new trees," Dela Llana-Koval said.
Zubiri said he will seek an investigation of Hanjin as well as the reported dismissal of SBMA and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) officials who allowed the destruction of the Subic rainforest.
Modern waste facilityIn the same news briefing, Arreza said the the $20 million condo project was built on a pre-existing developed area and will have a state of the art solid waste and waste water treatment facility.
"All lands in Subic are protected, but in varying degrees. Under our management plan, this area may be used for residential purposes and the core ecological zone, which are the no-touch, no development area is more than 2 kilometers away," Arreza explained.

Actor Gabby Concepcion took time out from his pictorial with ABS-CBN's Starstudio magazine to apologize to Sharon and offer "closure" to any unresolved emotional baggage between him and his ex-wife Sharon Cuneta.
Gabby and Sharon are now married to different people. Gabby was married to Genevieve "Ginbee" Yatco Gonzales in 2004. Sharon married lawyer (now Senator) Francisco "Kiko" Pangilinan in 1996.
Gabby made his statements in reaction to Sharon's statement to reporters, saying their relationship had "no closure."
Gabby told Ginger Conejero of ABS-CBN's TV Patrol World that he's willing to talk to Sharon to resolve any issues there might be. He also apologized on-camera.
"Oh well kung walang closure, nag-usap kami noon, pero kung di pa malinaw noon, gusto ko nang linawin. Whatever it is let's dig it out, but we can dig it out, between the two of us.
"Ang hirap kung minsan magsabi ng 'I'm sorry' pag may ginawa kang kasalanan parang naghahanap ng dahilan para ma-cover-up yung ginawa mo, na itama yung mali. eh. Siyempre dumaan na ako dun," Gabby said.
Then, looking straight at the camera, he gave his very public apology to his ex-wife and mother of his daughter KC:
"I'm really sorry for what i've done to you and what didn't turn out to be our future plans together. Things have changed. Our priorities have changed. I have changed. At that time things were just different and I'm really, really sorry for my mistakes to you, to the family or to anybody that I've hurt along the way. Maybe it's so difficult to define in numerals pero from the bottom of my heart talagang I'm really, very repentful."
Conejero then asked if Gabby had lost all feelings for Sharon.
"Hindi ko masasabing hindi. Hindi ko naman gagawin yung ginawa ko na, hindi nga alam ni Mayor Cuneta na kinuha ko yung anak niya," he replied.
After all is said and done, however, the actor said that he's glad to put the past behind him.

It is always pleasantly surprising to note that Iligan City is blessed with a picturesque countryside bordered by a seemingly infinite expanse of sea, adequate amenities complemented by well-paved main roads, warm and hospitable people, and most of all the seemingly seamless majestic waterfalls.
Although it may not often be included on most people’s lists of must-see destinations in the country, its simple charms invite us to take a detour from the usual and allow us to experience a refreshing change of scene.
Located on the northwestern coast of Mindanao facing Iligan bay, 795 kilometers south of Metro Manila, Iligan is a rare mixture of what is natural, industrial and cultural.

From a small trading and farming town of several thousand inhabitants sixty years ago, it has metamorphosed into an industrial city with more than 300,000 culturally diverse people living and working harmoniously towards their individual and the city’s well being.
Its industrialization came about due to its hydroelectric power plants, which supply the cheapest power in the whole island of Mindanao.

When hotelier Annabella Santos-Wisniewski first saw the Boracay property she acquired for her hotel, she discovered it was a piece of land that covered a hilly slope and stretched all the way to the beachfront located at the island’s tranquil Station 1.
"I fell in love with it immediately because its location between slope and sea offered some of the most magnificent views of the island. I certainly thought it would make an ideal location for a hotel," she says.
Wisniewski manages HSAI-Raintree, which operates the Discovery Suites and Discovery Tagaytay Suites. The hotel she eventually built on the parcel of land in Boracay is the Discovery Shores. The setting of the property inspired her to create "an environment of sublime indulgence."
"The beauty of Boracay itself was my only inspiration behind the concept of the resort. Here, the traveler will have a chance to experience modern indulgences in a setting that is pristine and natural," she explains.
Wisnewski hired the designers of W.V. Coscolluela and Associates, who collaborated with Budji Layug and Royal Pineda. The result of this collaboration is an interplay between familiarity and surprise, which is palpable in the hotel’s sleek cosmopolitan architecture. Cantilevered out over a slope, the clusters of vertical lines emphasize endless space and could be at home in a upscale urban community. The open canals meandering through the structures provide a playful counterpoint and an unmistakable resort feel. Against the Boracay skyline, the property cuts like a sleek stencil.
The architects and designers chose to use simple elemental materials such as wood, stone, glass, and cement, all of which are uniquely interpreted in the design of each of the 88 guestrooms. The approach to the guestrooms is open and floating. They’re carefully studied in such a way that every space is maximized effectively. By keeping the space simple and open, the feeling of the room is peaceful and uncluttered.
The rooms were also designed to offer every luxury amenity available to guests, but without making them forget they’re in a lush tropical island resort. The colors and materials chosen for the interiors serve as the reminders. Also, most of the guestrooms overlook either the mini gardens, the hotel’s 14-meter high waterfall, or the sea itself.
The cool, minimalist look of the hotel blends beautifully with the sugar-white sands of the island’s famous beach.
The clean architecture is also a sharp contrast to the gaudy and colorful structures that proliferate the rest of the beachfront of Boracay. Where the rest of the island resembles a venue for rambunctious partying, the look and location of Discovery Shores promises serenity and peace of mind.

PacMan takes WBC title from Marquez of Mexico...LAS VEGAS: Manny Pacquiao captured the World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight crown, dethroning Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez with a 12-round split decision victory.

In a rematch Saturday (Sunday in Manila) of a 2004 slugfest that ended in a draw, one judge gave Marquez a 115-112 decision, while another saw Pacquiao the winner by the same margin. The third judge gave the bout to the Asian star, 114-113.

The difference in a bout when both men were bloodied but traded hard punches to the finish proved to be a third-round knockdown inflicted by Pacquiao, who improved to 46-3 with two draws.“I did my best. I’m happy because I won,” Pacquiao said. “Marquez is a really hard opponent. I expected the fight was going to be hard. He moved fast. He had head movement and more counterpunches.”

Marquez, who fell to 48-4, said he felt robbed by the decision.“I thought I won. The decision wasn’t correct,” Marquez said. “I haven’t lost anything at all. The people know who really won the fight. Decisions like this are disturbing. I believe I won the fight.”Pacquiao said, “I think I won the fight.”

He is expected to move up to the lightweight division and challenge US fighter David Diaz, the WBC lightweight champion who improved to 34-1-1 with a majority decision win over Mexican Ramon Montano in a non-title undercard bout.

“We have a plan to fight at 135 pounds, but it’s not yet fixed,” Pacquiao said.He was expected to receive nearly $5 million from the pay-per-view battle with Marquez taking home about $1.5 million.

Pacquiao knocked down Marquez three times in the first round of their first meeting, but the Mexican collected himself and rallied for a draw as one judge scored the bout for each fighter and the third saw the bout as a draw.

The rematch began cautiously. Pacquiao landed a hard left and the evasive Marquez a solid right to the chin in a tactical first round. Marquez then tagged Pacquiao with a hard left to the chin late in the second round.

But aggressive Pacquiao struck late in round three, firing a hard left hand to the chin with 20 seconds remaining. The Asian superstar staggered Marquez’s knees again just as the bell sounded to end the round.“Our number one plan for training was the left hook. I was lucky enough to hit it in that round,” Pacquiao said.

With impressive upper body motion and footwork as well as powerful punches, Pacquiao continued to attack. Marquez answered by slowing the pace and working his right hand, often keeping the challenger at bay with counter-punches.“We pressed, and we hurt him three, four, five times,” Marquez said. “Like in 2004, it’s not just one round.”

An accidental head-butt midway into the seventh round opened a bloody cut over the right eye of Marquez and seconds later Pacquiao pressed the attack with a furious flurry.“It didn’t affect me,” Marquez claimed.Pacquiao also received a cut above his right eye and Marquez opened it into a wide bleeding gash with punches early in the eighth round, trickling blood interfering with Pacquiao and allowing Marquez to dominate the round.

“The cut, it really bothered me. I couldn’t see out of my right eye,” said Pacquiao. “That’s why I was so bothered. That’s why I couldn’t cover myself.”

He opened another cut above Marquez’s right eye in a tight ninth round and began the 10th with a hard left to the body in a hard flurry, then reopened the gash above Marquez’s eye while protecting his own cut.

The final round began tentatively but led to solid exchanges between the bloodied battlers in the last seconds, trading blows to the final bell that prompted each fighter to raise his hands in victory.

Pacquiao, 29, won his seventh fight in a row and improved to 20-1 since 1999, his lone loss a 2005 decision to Mexican Erik Morales. Marquez, 34, has lost only twice in that span, the other time in 2006 to Indonesian Chris John.

The Bat Cave. One will see in several tour guides and maps of Boracay something called the Bat Cave, which houses many giant fruit bats, and locals will be more than happy to accompany you there for a fee, or "tip". The cave is on the western-end of the island and down several dirt roads. The guide will then take you on a short hike through the forest to the mouth of a cave, which drops down at a very steep angle. The mouth of the cave is littered with large boulders, and is extremely difficult to enter and walk down. There is no visible path, no handrail, and the stones are extremely slippery with slime and bat guano, as well as extremely dangerous, since the cave is at such an extreme angle. Also, the air inside the cave is very warm and humid, and in addition to the amount of guano, is very difficult to breathe. Caution should be taken by those visiting and entering the cave. There are bats in the cave, but down at the bottom of it in the dark, and unless you have a flashlight or are there at dusk, you won't see them. The ceiling of the cave is interesting, however, with multiple, small stalactites. Upon leaving, you will be asked for 200-peso entry-fee on behalf of the family that owns the land, in addition to paying your guide.

Puka Beach - A quiet stretch of white sand along the northern tip of the island, Puka Beach is an image of what most people expect on a tropical island: white sand, azure water and relatively empty. This is where locals gather the small puka shells for some of the jewelry that is sold on the island so expect the sand to be more coarse than on White Beach. The water tends to be a little rougher on this side of the island but it is much quieter. Similarly, there are fewer services -- at last count there was one restaurant but you likely won't have a problem getting a cold drink or an ice cream as there are a few vendors that patrol the beach. The main road in Boracay terminates at Puka Beach therefore you'll be able to hire a tricycle to get there in less than 10-15 minutes from central White Beach. Make sure you arrange a pickup if it is a quiet day and no tricycles are hanging around the beach. Most people experience Puka as one of their sailboat or banca stops during a day trip. This is a good spot for a picnic, but be sure to bring your trash home with you.

On the island, the two main modes of transport are via motor-tricycles along the main road or by walking along the beaches. Pedicabs are also available for transport along the Beachfront Path. Other means of transportation include mountain bikes, quadbikes and motorbikes, all of which can be rented.

To explore around the island's coast, motorized bancas and sailing paraws are available for rent. These are outrigger canoes and are common sight in waters around the island. The sailing paraw is a narrow hulled boat with outriggers either side and with passengers sometimes seated on a trampoline platform between the outrigger supports. These are extremely fast off the wind, but can be unwieldy for inexperienced sailors.

Bulabog Beach runs parallel with White Beach and is located on the east side of the island. It is approximately 1.5kms long and has similar white sand to that found on White Beach. It is protected from strong seas by a coral reef located 500 meters offshore, and from late Oct. to April the Amihan wind(NE wind) make this beach very popular with windsurfers and kiteboarders.For these reasons it is often referred to as the "No.1 kite boarding beach in Asia." Bulabog Beach has the "old" Boracay atmosphere, being less developed than the White Beach area, quieter, more laid back, with onshore breezes most of the year, and a number of foreign residents have made it their home. In addition, resorts are starting to appear and the various types of water-sports (para-sailing, banana boats, jetskis, water-sking, etc.)are using this area during the White Beach off-season (May-Oct, when the Habagat wind blows). Access to the D'Mall Shopping Center is only a 5 minute walk and a couple of minutes later you are on White Beach with all the crowds, restaurants, bars, discos, etc.

Western Visayas

Western Visayas, one of the regions of the Philippines, is designated as Region VI. It consists of seven provinces; Aklan, Antique, Negros Occidental Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo ; and 17 cities making it the region with the highest number of cities. Iloilo City is the regional center.The Western Visayas region was created from Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo (including its then-subprovince of Guimaras) and Negros Occidental by Presidential Decree No. 1 as part of the Integrated Reorganisation Plan of President Ferdinand Marcos. The province of Palawan was transferred to Region VI (Western Visayas) on May 23, 2005 by Executive Order 429. The Department of the Interior and Local Government announced in June of 2005 that the transfer had been completed. However, Palaweños criticized the move, citing a lack of consultation, with most residents in Puerto Princesa City and all municipalities but one preferring to stay with Region IV-B. Consequently, Administrative Order No. 129 was issued on August 19, 2005 to address this backlash. This Order directed the abeyance of Executive Order 429 pending the approval of an implementation plan for the orderly transfer of Palawan from Region IV-B to Region VI. Hence, Palawan is currently (as of May, 2007) still part of Region IV-B.

Amihan and Habagat

Weather in Boracay is generally divided into two seasonal weather patterns known locally as the Amihan and Habagat seasons. In the Tagalog language, Amihan means a cool northeast wind, and Habagat means west or southwest wind; south-west monsoon. Amihan and Habagat seasons are generally associated respectively with the El Niño and La Niña global weather patterns. The Amihan season is characterized by moderate temperatures, little or no rainfall, and a prevailing wind from the east. The Habagat season is characterized by hot and humid weather, frequent heavy rainfall, and a prevailing wind from the west.
On Boracay, the main indicator of the switch between the Amihan and Habagat seasonal patterns is the switch in wind direction. In most years this transition is abrupt and occurs overnight. In some years there is a period of perhaps a week or two where the wind will switch between Amihan and Habagat patterns several times before settling into the pattern for the new season. As a general rule of thumb, Boracay will be in the Amihan weather pattern from sometime in September or October to sometime in May or June and in the Habagat weather pattern for the remainder of the year. These dates can vary in individual years, though.

Daytime temperatures on Boracay generally range from 77-90º F (25-32º C) from the beginning of the Amihan season into February or March, increase to the 82-100º F(28-38º C) range until the onset of the Habagat season, and moderate back to the 77-90º F (25-32º C) range with the return of the Amihan season. During Tropical Storm periods, temperatures can fall below 68º F (20º C). Tropical Storms can impact Boracay at any time of year, but are most likely to be seen during the Habagat seaso

Partly because of its wind and weather patterns, tourism in Boracay is at its peak during the Amihan season. During Amihan, the prevailing wind blows from the east. Boracay's main tourism area, White Beach, is on the western side of the island and is sheltered from the wind. During the Amihan season, the water off White Beach is often glassy-smooth. On the eastern side of the island, hills on the northern and southern ends of the island channel the Amihan season wind from the east onshore onto Bulabog Beach in the central part of the island's eastern side, making the reef-protected waters off that beach ideal for windsurfing and kiteboarding / kitesurfing.
Most Boracay hotels and resorts have Low and High Season price levels with High Season prices generally coinciding with Amihan Season dates. Sunset during Happy Hour on White Beach

Hey Jude bar usually has a live DJ, and the music makes a nice change from the ubiquitous Hip Hop and "R'n'B" played all over the island these days. Try their pizza and pasta dishes as well as tasty bar snacks to munch along with your cocktails.
JUICE located right between Boracay Regency and Boat Station 2 offers top notch cocktails and a variety of "sneaky smoothies". with a wide open courtyard opening up to the beach it tends to fill up by around 11pm but still very comfortable. The crowd is a nice mix of locals and foreigners. Great staff and charming bartenders.
Cocomangas, near station 1, is famous for it's "Still standing after 15" challenge. Drink 15 ferocious shots and win a t-shirt and a plaque on the wall. This bar is popular with the student crowd.
Bom Bom Bar (near D 'Mall) is a native style beach bar which often has live music. It's a popular hang out for artists and musicians.
Nigi Nigi's beach bar, between boat stations 2 and 3, three minutes walk north of the tourist center, is a popular centrally-located spot to have a cool drink and enjoy a little people watching.
Cocoloco, near boat station 3, is an attractive beach bar/restaurant which also serves tasty food. You can enjoy your drink by the beach, under the coconut trees, and there's a pool table in the bar too.
Red Pirates Pub, is a native style beach bar (near boat station 3) with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It's a good place to meet other travelers and chat, and sometimes there is a live tribal jam with bongo drums and native instruments.
Kurts Bar, near station 3, is run by friendly Bavarian Kurt and his wife Mags. It's a very popular spot to meet and chat, and one of the few places on the island serving draft beer.
Rumbas, in "D' Mall Plaza", is an English style bar that attracts a friendly crowd. The menu is pretty good too, especially the sirloin steaks.

Arwana Coffee Shop (near station 3) is one of the nicest spots in the area for a tasty breakfast at a beach side table.
Barracuda Snack Bar is near boat station 2.
Blue Mango, near station 3, comes highly recommended. There are some interesting mango-inspired creations on the menu too.
Cocoloco bar/restaurant near boat station 3 serves great Filipino and International cuisine in an attractive native-style setting.
Crafts Rooftop Bar are rumored to serve the most authentic English breakfast on the island.
Crafty's Rooftop Bar and Coffee Shop is located on the top level of the new Crafts Superstore at D' Mall's main road entrance. The deli sandwiches and salads are delicious and there is a wide selection of imported beers and ales. This is a great place to watch the sunset.
Cyma, in the new part of the mall. Excellent food and service at this Greek restaurant. Try the Mezedes Combination, the Spinach and Artichoke Fondue and the Chicken Souvlaki.
Dos Mestizos This restaurant is the brainchild of respected Boracay chef & restauranteur Binggoy Remedios and his close childhood friend, Jose Ramon Valdes Nieto. Both owners have Spanish ancestors, hence the name "Dos Mestizos". This restaurant serves a selection of excellent Tapas dishes and is located between boat stations 2 and 3, behind the Tourist Center.
D'Talipapa The best and cheapest place to eat. Around the place are a variety of food stores that offers to cook for you, you could just buy Fresh sea foods/ etc (located just near the stores) then have the stores cook it for you with what ever way you like it. (Imagine you can get Crabs for 250 Pesos for 1 Kilo opposed to buying in Restuarants that costs 130 Pesos/ 100 Gram).
Heidiland Deli - Next to the main plaza at the D'Mall Phase IV is a fully air-conditioned European style Deli selling all kinds of Deli food as cheeses, cold cuts, salami, yoghurt, wines and much more. Famous are the reasonably priced sandwiches.
Hey Jude, in front of D'Mall, serves good pizza and bistro style food. The beef kebabs are a must-try.
Jonas Fruitshake in Station 1. Their fruit shakes are to die for!
Kurt's restaurant and bar near station 3 has a wide selection of good German and Filipino dishes and a friendly atmosphere.
Lemon Cafe, in D' Mall. A new addition to the island, this place serves a variety of breakfasts, lunches and light meals. The service and presentation is excellent.
Manana, near boat station 1, serves large portions of tasty Mexican food. Guacamole is only available when avocados are in-season despite what the menu says.
Real Coffee, near boat station 1, serves a variety of pancakes, sandwiches, omelettes and salads, as well as freshly brewed coffee.
The English Bakery, near boat station 3, has several outlets for fresh baked goods and European breakfasts including a variety of sausages and rye bread.

Valhalla Steakhouse in the mall has just a few dishes on offer, but the steaks are hearty & delicious.
Zuzuni, near boat station 1, is the island's newest Greek restaurant, serving excellent cuisine in a romantic, beach front setting. The service is friendly and extremely efficient.

For those interested in Scuba Diving, there are approximately 20 Dive Centers along White Sands beach; it is a good place to learn or to improve your skills. Cost is typically $33 per dive which includes hire of all equipment.The dive centres operate a cartel and have agreed standard prices amongst themselves so prices will be the same at all centres. There are 25-30 dive sites within 10-15 minutes speed boat ride from the beach, suitable for beginners up to advanced level. Dives range from 'Angol Point' (10m), through 'Crocodile Island' (22-25m), a straightforward wall dive, up to 'Yapak'- a deep wall dive suitable for only the most experienced divers due to strong currents, although there is the possibility of seeing sharks and stingrays.

Along White Beach you will be approached frequently by women offering to give you a massage, which they will do on the spot or on a towel laid out on the beach - your choice.
A bit more organized, White Beach also has several "Massage Stations": collections of masseurs that have their mats set up. The stations are typically open as long as there are customers around but in general start to shut down just after sunset.
For Swedish, Acupressure, Shiatsu etc, visit Abe (pronounced Abby) the blind masseur who operates outside Cocoloco restaurant in Angol (south of boat station 3). Only P300 per hour.
There is a great outdoor massage station in the beach area of Nigi Nigi Beach Resort, where they have two tables set up. The booth is draped with curtains which they will close if you wish, or leave open if you want to watch the people on the beach. They offer every massage in the book, and charge 500 Peso for one hour.

Ceasar's, found along the main road near boat station 3, specializes in Thai massage and uses two masseurs simultaneously to deliver the service. A 90 minute massage is priced at $50 USD. Mandala Spa — is typically found near the top of the list of world spas. Situated at the top of a hill, Mandala offers everything from one hour massages (single and couple) to body scrubs, wraps, facials, baths and four hour packages that combine it all. Expect to pay $175 USD for the full four-hour prince/princess treatment. Boracay's Bulabog beach is known as the best kitesurf destination in Asia. The season runs from November through to March with onshore winds varying between 18-30 knots.

White Beach

White Beach, with its blindingly white and powdery sand, is the main tourism beach. It is a bit over four kilometers long and is lined with resorts, hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. In the central portion, for about two kilometers, there is a footpath known as the Beachfront Path separating the beach itself from the establishments located along it. North and south of the Beachfront Path, beachfront establishments do literally front along the beach itself. Several roads and paths connect the Beachfront Path with Boracay's Main Road, a vehicular road which runs the length of the island. At the extreme northern end of White Beach, a footpath runs around the headland there and connects White Beach with Diniwid Beach.

The establishment is set in a spacious tropical garden, and is a oasis reaching up to the beachfront, covering an area of about 4000m2....
They are trying to preserve the ambiance of our place to be relaxing and easy going, like Boracay was years ago, just a touch more convenient...
They still have some native- style bungalow where you can sleep under a mosquito net. This is probably a rarity by now on Boracay, and on top of its almost on the shore...

History and Location

The island was originally home to the Ati tribe. Boracay is part of Aklan Province, which became an independent province on April 25, 1956. Formerly undiscovered, it wasn't till the 1970s that tourism began to develop in Boracay and the island became popular with backpackers in the 1980s.
Boracay Island is located off the northwest corner of the island of Panay, and belongs to the Western Visayas island-group, or Region 6, of the Philippines. The island is approximately seven kilometers long, dog-bone shaped with the narrowest spot being less than one kilometer wide, and has a total land area of 10.32 square kilometers.
South-facing Cagban Beach is located across a small strait from the jetty port at Caticlan on Panay island, and the Cagban jetty port serves as Boracay's main entry and exit point during most of the year. When wind and sea conditions dictate, east-facing Tambisaan Beach serves as an alternative entry and exit point.
